The Girl with the Yellow Walkman

All I needed was the mirror and a brush to make me feel like the star I thought I was. It’s safe to say that even at a young age I was pretty smitten with music. I remember reading or rather singing the dialogue of chapter books, a loud for my whole family to hear. It was my thing. I’ve always included music in my daily routines which is why some of my best memories are always accompanied with music.

Before there was an iPod, mp3 files, and the such that came with the digital era there was my yellow Walkman, it’s safe to say that I’ve since graduated from a Walkman and have immersed myself into the digital age, but there was a time where I always carried that bright yellow contraption since I got it for my fourth birthday. Of course, I also carried a stash of extra batteries because with how much I used that Walkman it was bound to drain the batteries of its energy. Batteries meet their match in a four-year old girl.

Now what would a four-year old girl be listening to? You know the usual, a mixture of Selena’s Dreaming of You and the Eagles’ Hotel California. I was either wiggling my butt to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom or bobbing my head to Don Henley’s voice. All the while belting the lyrics all the way to our destination. I was a vampire of sorts draining the life out of batteries with my trusty yellow Walkman, and after a while my parents decided that it would be ideal to play my two favorite cassettes on the car system and not constantly having to buy batteries.  On long car rides to Mexico or even a 30-minute drive to visit family in Weslaco always meant I was thoroughly entertained.

My father jokes that the only word I knew to say was ‘higher’ or ‘subale’ for when my favorite songs came on. Music has always been a family affair, and that’s how all of my siblings and I fell in love with music. It’s good family time when everyone in the car is able to sing along to the song blaring from my father’s system, whether it be America, Pink Floyd, The Steve Miller Band, or the Eagles. I always feel at home in moments like that. Perhaps there is a reason I have a playlist called Homesick for when I need a reminder of home.

I may no longer need AA batteries to power my Zune, nor  is it the obnoxious bright yellow music player from when I was younger, the music however has stayed the same. My one constant that has a way of taking me home to the days of my yellow Walkman.

Dare Me! Dare Me!

My Playlist: “Dare Me! Dare Me!”

  1. Fighting for Nothing by Meg & Dia
  2. Feel Like Fame by Four Letter Lie
  3. Broken Arrow by Pixie Lott
  4. The Long Goodbye by Army Navy
  5. Today is the Day by Tim Myers
  6. Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie
  7. Rhythm of Love by Plain White T’s
  8. A Daydream Away by All Time Low
  9. Take Me As I Am by FM Static
  10. Every Road by The Maine

Life should always have a soundtrack. I find comfort in music, whether you are in the darkest of places, or just want to rip someone a new one, or feeling like brightest rays of sunshine are illuminating you way, there’s always someone out there that knows how you are feeling. My soundtrack for the week for now is all over the place genre speaking, but topically inclined toward the theme of love, well most. Weird how I’m single as the proverbial cheese but I’m drawn to these songs. My mind is trying to tell my heart something it doesn’t know.

Let Meg and Dia‘s words hurt you, scar you, and then heal you. Hope that they get stuck in your head like a broken arrow left in your flesh, sway to the rhythm, listen and daydream your day away, take a short or long road trip, just take the playlist as it is.

Take my music and I as we are.

The minor fall, the major lift.

Put Up Or Shut Up

All Time Low‘s Put Up Or Shut Up I choose you! If I’d have to spend my entire life listening to only this album I would.

put up or shut up

All I know is that I always go back to that album. I can listen to all the songs on repeat and sing along to all the words. Plus most of the songs on the album have sentimental value to them.

I’m pretty sure I can just block out the world and close my eyes and just allow for the music to surround me. Sure listening to it at the volume I do will make me lose hearing but I don’t care.

Besides, my bestie and I want to be 86 years old and causing trouble at our nursing home. No worries we’ll be burning rubber on our tricked out mopeds and singing Break Out! Break Out! at the top of our lungs as we escape the security guards and personnel.

Hey a girl can dream.

Beauty and the Beast in Wonderland

I’ve recently saw the movie Beastly. Yes I realize it’s been a while since the movie came out, and yes it a cliché plot, but I rather enjoyed the music, which is why I downloaded most of the music that I heard on the film. Inspiration for my musical journey is everywhere. While Get Free by The Vines and Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie are some old favorites of mine, I found myself drawn to Vanity (which is heard in the opening credits of the movie) and Wonderland.

Of the two songs, Wonderland became my favorite. After several hundred listens I have learned that the bridge and second verse are my favorite parts of the song. The bridge:

I don’t believe in fairy tales..
I don’t believe in fairy tales..
I don’t believe in fairy tales,
but I believe in you and me!

Is repetitive, catchy and easy for listeners to learn. Needless to say, I’m certain that my family have heard my wail and scream this aloud the past couple of days.

The second verse, well I rather like what the lyrics are saying. Other than the bridge I quickly caught on to the lyrics. Okay, you caught me I latched on them and I hummed along to it in my head for most of my awake period.

When I lay my head down
to go to sleep at night..
My dreams consist of things
that’ll make you wanna hide.
Dont let me in ya your tower.
Show me your magic powers!
I’m not afraid to face
a little bit of danger, danger!
I want the love,
the money and the perfect ending
You want the same as I, I.
So stop pretending!
I wanna show you how
good we could be together..
I wanna love you through the night,
we’ll be a sweet disaster!

As all tunes that end up stuck in your head, this one also has a very nice beat. I found myself welcoming chores as long as I could listen to this song. You bet I was dancing with the broom while sweeping this past weekend! However, it did come with a downfall, as it did serve as a distraction when I “tried” to clean my room. I got caught in the music and ended up dancing around the room and possibly tripping over the many items I should have picked up instead of trying to maneuver around them.

I’d say that Wonderland has become my newest guilty pleasure. Give it a listen and it just might become one of yours.

Other songs to also listen and download:

On The Radio by Regina Spektor

The Long Goodbye by Army Navy

Broken Arrow by Pixie Lott
