I Can’t Be Held Responsible

For the life of me, I cannot understand why I have listened to this song on repeat for many days in a row. I’m talking hours. It was like every time I had the ample time to just lay and breath, this song was on repeat. It’s no surprise that I’ve been in search of all the songs from the 90′s that I remember and love. So it was in this moments months ago I dug through Eve 6, Vertical Horizon, and Lifehouse I came upon The Verve Pipe’s single The Freshmen. Yes the same band that brought us Bittersweet Symphony. Those exact ones. It was after listening to Vertical Horizon’s Everything You Want, that YouTube so wisely recommended that I watch the video for The Freshmen. I instantly fell in love and gladly abused that replay button until I got tired of having to press this button so that my ears could be satisfied. Solution? Well download it of course. Funny enough it turned out that I had downloaded the song months ago, I just never gave it a proper listen. Don’t I feel so silly.

I really like this song, the weird part is the meaning of the song. Now there are several popular theories over the topic of the song. The most popular is it’s about an ex-girlfriend of singer Brian, who apparently aborted his and her future child. To keep myself from going further into the realm of politics, I’ll just add well that’s a depressing topic to listen to for hours. Yet there I was listening to this song for hours.

Now obviously it’s not the topic of the song that keeps me at peace for hours to end when I listen to this song. Easy listening and pretty lyrics, that I can relate to without of course the abortion part.

In short, this is my appreciation post of good songs that can still be good even 15 years later.

The minor fall, the major lift.

For the life of me I cannot remember

What made us think that we were wise

And We’d never compromise

For the life of me I cannot believe

We’d ever die for these sins

We were merely freshmen
